Houston, We Have a Crawler!

faster than a speeding bullet...

Our little man is a officially mobile. Started out as a kind of shuffle--he used one leg to push off, and the other worked at moving forward, so the result looked something like a quasimodo crawl...it was hilarious, and he couldn't actually move very fast so we felt like we were still safe..kevin and i knew we had to get moving on the baby-proofing, but we still had time--plenty of time right?.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha....ladies and gentleman, the time has passed. the simplest way to put it is that Levi is ALL over the place...one minute he is at the end of the living room, the next he's made it all the way to the TV, pulled himself up the stand, and is babbling gleefully, while simultaneously burning his young retinas from the glare of the enormous flat screen grandpere gifted us with not so long ago(thanks dad--we really do love it!)so...flat screen is now attached to the wall, and even an earthquake couldn't bring that sucker down (thanks grandpop!).

No longer can I race up the stairs for a quick bathroom break and expect the little one to be in the same spot, playing oh so nicely with his blocks. I can't even put him on the bathroom floor without some disasterous attempt on his part to open up every cabinet and explore.

and the "quasimodo crawl"..gone...disappeared, replaced with a full-on crawl that has miraculously gone from "haha, look he's trying to crawl..." to "what the hell, was that a baby?!?...no levi wait, don't touch that...NO!!!".

when did this happen? where did my infant go? when did this baby take his place?

what seemingly harmless household object will need to be replaced/removed/redesigned next in order to avoid pain/injury?

Any bets?

Levi is 8 months tomorrow!

Gettin' Vertical

Levi's experience on this earth has officially reached a new level.  No he can't quite crawl yet, nor is he walking, but he has elevated himself to new heights; if not physically, then spiritually.

You see, Levi has discovered the joy and the power that is locked inside the simplest of gestures....the high five!  From celebrating future goals to saying hello to a good friend, the high five will offer Levi yet another mode to communicate his elation and connection to those around him.  We all celebrate this day and welcome Levi into a world all its own.

One Act

Please remember that a blog is a journal of sorts.  You may have a tendency to draw conclusions about us based on the lack of depth in our conversation(s) listed below, or by how many (or how few) onesies, shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces, hats, socks, “mucklucks”, etc that we may decide to place on our child.  This is simply meant to be a reflection on the stresses of transporting a fairly large, active seven-month-old (yes, for real…seven months already) in a geographic location north of Washington D.C. (maybe Virginia during some real cold winters).  We ask that you draw not, the conclusion your mind may like to two minutes from now (this may fluctuate based on the speed at which you read or how many interruptions you have in the office).  We ask that you simply use the previous 28+ years we have spent navigating our way to January 26, 2009 (more like October, 2008….on that day when it started to get cold), to pass judgment on two young parents…in love, raising a child, and trying the best we can (I swear!).

Brain:

“Layers, layers, layers…did I put the clothes in the drier?....going to store.  focus!  Yes, I did put them in…good, one less thing…Long sleeve onesie, sweatshirt, fleece, bundleme.  Will that be enough? Will he be warm enough?  Yeah, should be.  No, gut is telling me something else.  Maybe a long sleeve shirt on top of onesie.”

Conversation:

“what do you think, ___________________ (insert Kev or Tash)”

“I don’t know, what do you think?

“I think you should do what you think is best.”

“Well, I don’t know. …Let me check what it feels like outside.”

Leave Left…..Reenter 20 seconds later

“It’s cold out there. Let’s put a long sleeve shirt over the onesie. Is that too much?  He gets hot really easily. Will he be okay?”

“I think he will be fine.  I haven’t been outside yet..if it’s cold, then put the extra shirt on.”

“ Alright, I will….We are going to be late again!”

Please take into account, this a variation of any of a number of conversations that could take place.  These cannot be considered direct quotations, but simply generalizations taken from the “average” of approximately 150 conversations.

As outlined above , the winter, “getting Levi to go outside” routine can cause some indecision/confusion.  However, it is my/our hypothesis that it might cause some discomfort for Levi as well.  As hard as we may try, when multiple long sleeve shirts are involved, Levi always seems to end up with lumpy arms.  These lumps are not caused by some “Dr. Clump” potion, but more directly by the long sleeve shirt closest to Levi’s skin.  Tasha and my index finger try as they may to reach inside the sleeve of one shirt and pull down the other, but it does not lay smooth the way we would hope.  Poor Levi, he sits, lacking the ability (although he is brilliant…brilliant , I tell you!) to artfully adjust his own clothing to his comfort level. Thus will come the conversation 12 years from now…”Mom and Dad, you dressed me in that?! ”   But, for now, we do what we can and we reach those portions of sleeves that our fingers come into contact with, we kiss Levi on the forehead, and say “Sorry, Bubba Lou, we are only going in the car for 10 minutes. We will be there soon, I promise. ”

Looking at each other:

“At least he’ll be warm.”

We only do it cause we care, Bubba.
