Deck the Halls with Bowls of Pasta

This is what was leftover after Levi finished with a full bowl of cavatelli and one HUGE meatball on Christmas Eve. Levi became a celebrity at Sorrento's and won the hearts of all. Somehow, he also managed to wake up hungry the next morning.

First Santa Visit

It was raining buckets on that Saturday, but we were determined to visit Santa. So we hopped on the train, and made the trek through soggy Union Square, and arrived soaked, but excited. Levi had fallen asleep the moment the train started moving, so I'm not sure his level of excitement was the same as ours.

We had heard how awesome the ABC Carpet and Home Santa was--who needed crazy Macy's! and from our place in line, we could see he truly was fantastic. This was the real Santa. No fake beard, garish red coat...no sir, this was Norman Rockwell Santa.

The line was shorter and went quicker than we thought though, and genius parents that we are, we decided after some deliberation to wake up our sleeping toddler, dislodge him from his warm cocoon of a stroller, and shove him into the waiting lap of a strange, enormous, grinning, bear of a man. Parents of the YEAR, right?

As you can see, Levi was less than thrilled with flesh-and-blood version of the man we had been talking up for the past month.

Words I never thought would be strung together in a sentence...

Say bye bye poo poo!

No Levi, the tv doesn't want a cracker.  Or a kiss.

Please don't stick your hand in the toilet.

More to come...

Thanks to Amy for the pic!

Heartbreak and Ecstasy

The day has arrived (luckily there is only two weeks left of this nonsense) when Levi knew that I would be leaving this evening.  45 minutes before we were to depart for daddy's Sunday chauffeur (thanks for spelling predictive text), Bolt Bus, I packed a few items in my bookbag/"lifeline of the last 4 months." It was then that I hearsd the words..."buh-bye." It was as sure and confident as he was when he asked for crackers earlier in the day. Levi knew daddy was leaving.  I was calmed and disturbed by the matter of factness of his statement.  The next 45 minutes ate up my heart and now I am on the Jersey Turnpike (the armpit of America's infrastructure)  waiting for another week to pass. To the loves of my life...11 days...we are doing it!          Sorry y'all it had to be done. Bless

Super Levi!

Kevin's super-creative students had a field day with the new smartboard.  Levi's picture provided a perfect backdrop for their creative genius.  Here, Salif imagined Levi as a superhero (which he is).

Levi went to the Please Touch Museum with daddy.

He learned to:

do his own grocery shopping and drive his own car...

Guess Mom and Dad are sleeping in this Saturday,

Happy Labor Day(s) !

Holy Belly Batman! June 2008

I remember June 23rd, 2008. I woke up that morning, and I was FINALLY having some contractions. The kid was already 10 days late by then. We had tried everything we could think off to bring on the labor (3 days of eggplant parmesan, spicy foods, walking walking walking, just relax!, massage, and on and on and on) and I thought for sure he would be here by the end of the evening. My parents, Kevin and I decided to have a celebratory IHOP mid-morning meal, and the entire time I blissfully ate pancakes and oj in an attempt to fuel my body for the hard work to come.

The day passed slowly. The contractions came, went, came went. Stopped. I kept waiting for them to come back, and waited and waited. When they finally returned, it was 3am of the 24th of June and I knew, just knew he was on his way.

Well, we all know how that turned out--so much for mother's intuition.

as everyone around me kept repeating (incessantly I might add)..."He can't stay in there forever". And I knew this. But darn it. it wasn't following my plan. my carefully constructed "this is how my labor and delivery will happen" plan that I had spent months organizing, packing for, and anticipating. I should have just napped all day,(oh my god, when was the last time we could just nap the day away?!?), maybe enjoyed a bubble bath, or read a novel in one sitting, instead of stressing and driving myself, and everyone around me bonkers. because clearly my plan was drifting wildly off course and there was not a darn thing I could do about it.

Two days later, we finally welcomed our bubbalou into the world. (and my carefully constructed "plans", HA. That is all I will say about that. HA HA HA)

This was the first time my infant son taught me a valuable lession--and after the year we had, it has certainly not been the last.

Right now, our family unit is going through another waiting game. And I try to tell myself that once again, there is not a darn thing we can do about it.

And as hard as it is to see our carefully constructed plans unravel, watching our son playing and running and just enjoying life inspires me to try my very best to take each day as a gift and enjoy every moment.

So thanks Levi Boo! and Happy Labor Day(s) to me!

Levi says....

Wow!

No No No

L'eau ("the water" in french)

ball

anana (i think that means banana)

uh-oh

buuk (i am pretty sure he mean book)

bye (in a southern accent)

and of course, mama and dada.

He's also taken to waving at everyone and anyone within a mile radius, even if they aren't looking at him. Then he gets sad when they don't wave back.

(jerks all of them. wave to my kid will ya? what? you didn't see him? well, that's a sorry excuse.)

Levi will be 1 year old on the the 25th!!!!

Daycare Adventures

These pics are from earlier this winter...Shelley loves to photograph the kids at daycare..it's nice to see what he was up to when we weren't around.

Levi and Piper (she has a special place in her heart for Levi!)

Levi and Ivy...and yes, I know this is highly irregular...but for a while there, crawling up to unsuspecting toddlers, pushing them down on the floor and "mounting them" like a rider on a horse was Levi's thing...he was known as "the mounter". thankfully, he's grown out of that phase...

Scenes from the Zoo...as you can tell, Levi found a water bottle much more fascinating than any stinky animals!

Shirtless...redux

We've had a couple of days with above 85 degree temps here in Philly, and in the Dougherty household that invariably leads to Kevin shucking his shirt off the minute he enters the door, tossing it at the first available piece of furniture, and opening all the windows wide to let in the heat.

some of you remember last summer...when the little one was just getting used to being alive, summer was in full swing, and hairy (and not so hairy) chests were on full display.

April 2009

oh how time flies when you're having fun--(like father like son).

I love my boys.

We Be Jammin'

Hanging with Umi, Sylvie, and friend Demetrius...jammin out at the Lara and Joe Show!

Levi Incognito

Thanks to Auntie Ames, Levi was sporting the Ashanti style China Bang Series locks in Brooklyn this weekend. Levi was mesmerized by Mommy and Daddy's favorite place and had a blast chillin' in the park and hanging with friends.
